TL;DR: Pinax's week in Bangkok started with side events like the Staking Summit, Datapalooza BKK, and the Decentralised Data Summit. The main event, Devcon SEA 2024, brought together 12,500 innovators from 130 countries at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, featuring six stages and numerous workshops. The conference emphasized collaboration over marketing, with notable discussions around decentralized science and connections made through activities like the on-chain frog-collecting initiative.
From collecting digital frogs to deep-diving into decentralized data, Pinax’s week in Bangkok involved multiple data-focused events where the team connected and engaged with fellow builders and innovators of decentralized systems. The week culminated in Devcon SEA 2024, where 12,500 innovators gathered to shape the future of Ethereum.
Warming up for Devcon with data-related side events
The Pinax team’s adventure in Bangkok began with vibrant side events leading up to Devcon. The journey kicked off with the Staking Summit on November 8 and 9, where Pinax’s Matthew Darwin explored the future of staking, highlighted by Vitalik Buterin’s keynote on long-term perspectives.
On November 10, team members immersed themselves in data at Datapalooza BKK, a side event by The Graph. At the event, Matthew Darwin presented a well-attended workshop on how to run Firehose. There were many other interesting speakers and panels, like Sam Green, who introduced the Cambrian Network, which is built on The Graph.
You can watch the entire Datapalooza event on The Graph’s YouTube channel.
Check out our quick recap video:
After Datapalooza, the Pinax team went to the Decentralised Data Summit at Soho House, connecting with innovators in decentralized data. We met plenty of data enthusiasts there and made some great connections.
The blockchain data focus of side events continued on November 11 with DuneCon, a haven for blockchain data analysts. In a beautiful setting at Marriott Hotel Surawongse, speakers and panels covered topics like multichain data accessibility, on-chain data potential, and blockchain adoption strategies.
These activities set the stage for the main event, Devcon, where early subscribers Matthew and Martin proudly secured their iconic green frog hats, a subtle hint at a whimsical theme for Devcon Bangkok 2024. With the warm-up complete, the team was primed for an unforgettable Devcon experience!
On to the main event: Devcon
Devcon SEA 2024 in Bangkok, held from November 12 to 15, was a vibrant celebration of the Ethereum community.
With 12,500 attendees from 130 countries, the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center buzzed with energy across three floors, featuring six stages, a hacker cave, a decompression room, a music stage, and a food court. All that, plus many workshops and focus groups were organized in the hallways.
We visited The Graph booth and enjoyed chatting with fellow indexers and subgraph and Substreams developers.
Conference attendees connected through a unique on-chain frog-collecting activity, scanning QR codes to make connections. Keynotes like Vitalik Buterin’s “Ethereum in 30 Minutes” and Aya Miyaguchi’s “Redefining Boundaries in the Infinite Garden” inspired the crowd.
A total of 300 hours of content were produced on these stages, and we recommend looking at the complete list of talks published on the Ethereum Foundation’s YouTube channel.
One talk we especially enjoyed because of the fun animations was Kelvin Fichter’s, which clarified crypto terminology with humor and insight.
Devcon emphasized workshops and collaboration over marketing, exemplified by Pinax’s discussions with Sourcify to enhance The Graph CLI and connections with Drips Network, supporting open-source development. A notable trend was the buzz around decentralized science (DeSci), reflecting the conference’s role as a hub for cutting-edge ideas.
The Ethereum Foundation’s excellent organization made these four days unforgettable, fostering the collaborative spirit of web3.
More side events and a farewell dinner to remember
During and after Devcon, Bangkok buzzed with notable side events. Uniday by Uniswap highlighted decentralized trading advances, and Felix from The Graph spoke on decentralized infrastructure at DePIN Day. The Injective Summit featured a Graph booth, and parties like RAAVE by Aave Protocol, in partnership with Aptos and Chainlink, offered an opportunity to shake our dancing legs and socialize without shilling.
On November 16, the Pinax team enjoyed a memorable Thai dinner and reflected on our Bangkok adventures before parting ways. Grateful for Thailand’s hospitality, we look forward to future collaborations.
